About the Brewery
Kutná Hora’s Unyielding Spirit
Kutná Hora, a storied medieval town once nearly equal to Prague in wealth and stature due to its silver mines, faced unimaginable challenges to preserve its brewing heritage. Established in 1573, its brewery—one of the world’s most traditional—forged a legacy of crafting exceptional beer that stood the test of time. Yet, when Heineken acquired and swiftly closed it in the modern era, it seemed the end had come for this iconic institution. Against all odds, Kutná Hora’s indomitable resolve shone through as a local entrepreneur defied the closure, restarting production on the same historic grounds to continue crafting its legendary authentic Czech Pilsners and Dark Lagers.
A Triumph of Tradition
The brewery’s revival is a testament to its grit, reclaiming its place in the face of adversity to produce beers like the Kutná Hora 12, now hailed as a pinnacle of pilsner-style Real Bohemian Lager, alongside its richly crafted Dark Lagers. This success stems from an unwavering commitment to ancient methods: a farm-to-bottle operation using only local grains, open-vat fermentation that few still dare to practice, and extensive lagering times of 2 to 3 months for every beer, ensuring unmatched depth and authenticity. Once nearly lost, these traditions now thrive again, delighting the locals in the town of Kutná Hora, and those lucky enough to find it in select markets in the United States.
